Spiez is a charming little town on the shores of Lake Thun at the foot of the Niesen. Though not a tourist mecca, the berg has the reputation of being a pleasant summer resort and a relaxing excursion center. Its modest reputation aside, Baumberger creates marvelous artistic bait for Spiez, focusing on its reputed panoramic view and castle museum to impressionistically evoke the gentle calm of the region, utilizing blocks of color to manufacture an appealing visual tension. A native of Zurich, Baumberger regarded himself primarily as a painter, creating posters merely to generate some income. Nonetheless, he produced a magnificent body of more than 200 posters, distinguished not by a style, but by stylistic diversity–each perfectly suited to the client’s needs.
