Autograph Document Signed 'Steuben,' February 4, [no year], New York, 5' x 8', Choice Fine. A sight draft: 'Please to pay to Mr. Mulligan or ordre at ten days Sight the Sum of 30 Dollars on my account.' Some fold wear, but no cancellation marks. Written and signed with a paraph in dark brown ink. Recommended to George Washington by Benjamin Franklin, Von Steuben arrived at Valley Forge in February 1778, where he was named inspector general and given the task of training the troops there. He was markedly successful and led Continental forces at Monmouth and Yorktown. He was commissioned major general in the Continental army and became a trusted advisor to Washington. After the war, he became an American citizen, was one of the organizers of the Society of Cincinnati, and made his home in New York from 1784-94. He wrote 'Prepared Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States' (1778-79).
