When the word "diesel” is discussed in polite society, thoughts of fumes and deafening engines more often than not pop to mind. But British Railways is here to dispel that antiquated notion. Their new diesel trains are "quick, clean and comfortable,” the perfect transport for "Holiday makers, shoppers and commuters,” a service of the English Lakeland and North Wales lines. Their "reasonably priced Day Trips and Runabout Tickets” (if there ever was a more precious name for a rail pass, I’ve never heard it), make it an irresistible notion. Hopefully, you’ll pardon the heavy use of textual quotation, but these words, coupled with Barber’s serene and lovely recreation of "A diesel train on the shore of Bassenthwaite Lake, near Keswick, Cumberland” makes for locomotion promotion at its genteel best.
