To a Mr. Baldwin, offering him a position as StephensÕ secretary, assisting him with correspondence and legal research. The employment is contingent on whether or not StephensÕ present secretary, Mr. Sidell, is appointed collector at Brunswick. In part: '...I find it absolutely necessary for my secretary to board in the hotel with me, so as to be ready at hand at an early hour in the morning as well as after night, and frequently to read to me until ten or eleven oclock at night.... I shall soon be receiving proof-sheets from my forthcoming history, and I shall wish you to look after the careful perusal and correction of those sheets as they come to hand....' Signed boldly but shakily by Stephens, who had been reduced to using crutches and a wheelchair. He would resign from Congress in November 1852 and die on March 4, 1883.
