Partially-printed Document Signed by “F. R. Whitnell,” president of “the Fairhaven Mutual Marine Insurance Company,” on a $2,500 insurance policy covering “catchings on board the barque Draco,” August 31, 1855, 11” x 9”, 1 page policy with integral sheet, completed in manuscript, Choice Extremely Fine. The premium for this policy was $201, which covered sperm oil and whale oil--valued at $1.75 and 70¢ per gallon, respectively. The beneficiary of this policy, #9, was “James V. Cox.” Light blue paper in outstanding condition, with normal folds. Of historical note are the detailed conditions and instructions covering products of the whaling industry--much discussion about how the insurance could would cover oil catchings, blubber, oil in casks, etc.
