Lot 240: Gen. Daniel Sickles Signed Check
Autographs
The First Man Acquitted Of A Murder Charge On The Grounds Of Temporary Insanity

DANIEL EDGAR SICKLES, Union General, the first man acquitted of a murder charge on the grounds of temporary insanity.
Check Signed, partially-printed and accomplished in autograph, 8" by 3," New York City, June 25, 1885. Drawn on the "Bank of the Metropolis" and payable to "Herring & Co." in the amount of $9.50. Endorsed and punch canceled. In Choice Extremely Fine condition. Among the many scandals associated with Sickles is the financial one that forced the hero of Gettysburg from the Chairmanship of the New York State Monuments Commission - a post that he was just about to take up when he wrote this check. Anything to do with money, or women, or murder, makes a nice souvenir of this controversial general and war hero.
