None of the feral magnetism associated with Baker’s performance persona appears in this lovely drawing. Instead of unleashed sensuality, we’re presented with an affectionate portrait from a hand obviously enamored not only with her exotic beauty but one that admired her on a more heartfelt level. Not that it was especially difficult to find a fan amidst the parade of admirers that Josephine held in her sway during the late 1920s. Still, there appears to be a personal involvement here, more an attraction to the spirit of the entertainer than to an obsession with her physical attributes. It’s not clear exactly where Brand came into contact with Baker–perhaps it was from her German appearances several years before the drawing’s execution. It is, however, clear that his handiwork was intended as an homage, a singular statement intended for Josephine’s eyes, complete with the following inscription at bottom: "The famous and fabulous Josephine Baker. With love, Rolf Brand, Munich.”
