For the first three-quarters of the 20th century, Derry & Toms was one of the great department stores on Kensington High Street in London. It was certainly the one with the oldest history: Various members of both the Derry and Toms families had had small shops on the street as early as 1828, and in the 1850s the two clans merged by marriage. Rapid expansion followed and by 1900 Derry & Toms was a full-fledged department store with 200 live-in staff. Growth continued until the World War I slump. By 1916 the store was struggling–surely one of the reasons, along with the growth of the Underground as an advertising medium–that the store turned to poster advertising. From 1917 until the firm was taken over in 1920, the store commissioned 20 or so artists and graphic designers to create what turned out to be an enormously successful poster campaign. In Derry & Tom’s gently self-teasing way, "Dainty Dress Goods” are deliberately given a somewhat precious, quasi-Oriental image. The branches and birds breaking out of the frame is a sophisticated touch, putting a bit of ironic distance between viewer and picture. The coloring truly is delicate–mint greens and pink blossoms, in a tasteful blue-grey border.
