Autographs
Rocket Scientist Collects His Newspaper Clippings

WERNHER VON BRAUN. Ex-Nazi rocket pioneer responsible for developing the American space program.
Typed Letter Signed, with three-line autograph addendum, 1 page, 8” x 10.75” , on his decorative NASA letterhead, Huntsville, Alabama, November 8, 1861, to Mr. M.M. Turner, President of the Roscoe Turner Aeronautical Corporation in Indianapolis. Very Fine. Boldly indited in bright blue fountain pen ink; a minuscule chip and tiny tear at left margin do not detract from this handsome piece. In full: “It was very thoughtful of you to send me the clippings from the Indianapolis newspapers concerning my visit there and my speech at DePauw University. I just wanted to take this means to thank you and tell you that I appreciate receiving them for my scrapbook. P.S.
And let me thank you again for taking us out to lunch. I enjoyed our discussion immensely.”

Having helped to bomb London and put a man on the moon, Dr. von Braun’s legacy may be said to be mixed - but of his genius there has never been any dispute. No doubt, then, the conversation at the lunch referred to here would have been high-flying, as it is most likely that Roscoe Turner - the champion racing pilot of aviation’s golden age, and a consultant to the House of Representatives’ Science and Astronautics Committee - was present, too.
