Lot 232:Edward Rutledge Signed Document 1781
Autographs
(EDWARD RUTLEDGE), Signer of the Declaration of Independence; Governor of South Carolina.
Autograph Document unsigned, February 2, 1781, South Carolina, 12.5' x 8', Extremely Fine. Written in RutledgeÕs hand on laid, watermarked paper, the document is a petition by a minor, John Mitchell, that Robert Campbell be appointed his guardian. A docket notation on the verso shows that the petition was granted. Other than a couple of tiny edge tears, in excellent condition. Clearly and boldly penned. Edward Rutledge was a member of the first and second Continental Congresses. He opposed independence at first, but later influenced the South Carolina legislation to vote for it, and signed the Declaration of Independence himself.
