Autographs
Early New York Governor Rip Van Dam
Brings Suit for Five Pounds
“in the fourth Year of the Reign of William & Mary”

(RIP VAN DAM), New York politician and Acting Colonial Governor.
Manuscript Document, brown-inked writing on fine-laid paper, unsigned, [no date] c. early 1700s, New York City, 12.25” x 8,” Fine. Details a complaint between Van Dam and a Peter White: “Rip Van Dam ... complains of Peter White late of the City of New York ... Where the said Peter the first day of July in the fourth Year of the Reign of William & Mary ... at the Dock Warf in the City of New York was indebted unto the said Rip in two pounds fifteen shillings and three pence lawful money of New York for divers good wares & merchandise...” Apparently White was to assume the debt and pay Van Dam, but refused, and so Van Dam brings a suit for five pounds. Lightly toned document, normal folds, expertly repaired and restored, minor edge wear.
