As was his want, the artist dispenses with the notion of trains altogether, instead focusing on the local color, in this case, a languorous pair of damsels collecting some of the lush local flora to advertise the PLM’s Paris/Nice line. The summeriness of the design is such to make the title of the piece–Winter in Nice–seem deliberately ironic. The addition of the Victorian pier as an inset placed onto a fan also adds a distinctly temperate touch to the proceedings. And though we wouldn’t deign to accuse the artist of any plagiaristic activities, it’s interesting to note the similarities between this and an identically titled ChÈret design (see PAI-XIX, 291) executed some two years earlier.
