Lot 229: George Ross Signed Document 1767
Autographs
Member of the Continental Congress and Signer of the Declaration of Independence

GEORGE ROSS, American Revolutionary patriot, member of the Continental Congress and Signer of the Declaration of Independence.
Document Signed (twice), accomplished in manuscript on vellum, 1 page, 25.5' x 13.75, Lancaster County, March 11, 1767. Choice Fine: some partial separation and slight paper loss at folds has been reinforced on verso with archival tape, and the text and signatures are a bit faded - but the wax and paper seals are intact and this is withal an impressive-looking document. This elaborate document records the sale of 14 parcels of land by John Musser to John Ralfe. Ross, then a prominent lawyer, had a hand in the transaction and so signed twice, along with others.

The striking vellum document is boldly marked 'Indenture', meaning that it is a contract between two or more persons, indented or cut unevenly along the top. It was customary to make two instruments exactly alike, and it was then usual to write both on the same vellum, with some words or letters written between them, through which the vellum was cut, either in a straight or indented line, in such a manner as to leave one-half of the word on one part, and half on the other. The instrument commences with these words, "This indenture."
