F. HUGO D'ALESI (1849-1906)
229. Pyrenees.
29 1/4 x 41 1/2 in./74 x 105.4 cm
Imp. A Bellier, Bordeaux
Cond B+/Slight tears at paper edges.
D’Alesi was born in Rumania. Once in France, he became an immensely popular and prolific artist in the 1880s and 1890s. He was also an exacting artist, “ . . . notorious for having ruined several printers, not hesitating to ask for one or two extra color printings in order to obtain exactly the shading he wanted” (Livre de l’Affiche, p. 14). This opulent fascination with tonal precision provides a panoramic, yet geographically distinct triptych for the French Central rail system’s service to the Pyrenees region, the most satisfactory of the country’s frontiers, dividing France and Spain. Rather than presenting one mountainous vista, d’Alesi gives us a more comprehensive picture–the Basque coast promenades of Biarritz, the balustrade majesty of Pau and the splendor of the Pyrenees’ venerable spa destination, Luchon.
