ANONYMOUS
225. Mamaroneck. 1961.
14 x 22 in./35.7 x 56 cm
Cond A-/Slight tears and stains at edges.
On September 23, 1661, John Richbell, a prosperous trader descended from the landed gentry of Great Britain, acquired "three necks of land”–or Mamaroneck in their native tongue–on the Westchester Path from Chiefs Wappaquewam and his brother Manhatahan of the Mohegan (or Mohican) tribe. And though the prosperous town on Long Island Sound would not become incorporate until 1895, this nostalgically poetic silk-screen design by initialed artist "G.S.” commemorates that day three-hundred years gone by at the mouth of the Mamaroneck River, "Where The Fresh Water Meets The Salt,” with the past ironically made reverential flesh in the foreground while the future meanders by in the golden cloudscape behind him.
