In 1901, in the Midwestern blue-collar Mecca of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, two men in their early 20s, William Harley and Arthur Davidson, began experimenting with “taking the work out of bicycling.” After making innumerable changes and adjustments to their engine design, along with the addition of a new looped frame, production of three separate models of motorcycle began in 1903. By 1920, Harley-Davidson had become the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world, boasting dealers in 67 countries. The Twenties were indeed an innovative decade for the motorcycle magnates, including the introduction of the teardrop gas tank in 1925 and, in 1928, the front brake. As the opening page of the Harley-Davidson website states: “It’s one thing to have people buy your products. It’s another for them to tattoo your name on their bodies.” In order to introduce their new "Stream-Line” model, the company has its promotional department do away with the recreated ridership altogether, correctly assuming that the look of the latest model will more than adequately lure those who are willing to give themselves over to the motorcyclic lifestyle–a dedication bordering on the sacramental. A heralding "It’s Here!” accompanied by an allusive speeding in-air companion and the hook is baited.
