EDITH PIAF, Iconic French chanteuse.
Letter Signed, in English, 1 page, 8' x 10', New York, January 7, 1848. To 'Sir.' In full: 'Answering your questions I can tell you that the record you want is not yet on the market. But in that subject I can say the necessary is made and I think that within a month you will find it easily. The title of this record is 'Le chant de pirate.' I take notice of what you said concerning me. I am very sensible of what you write me in your letter. Thank you for telling me such nice things...P.S. Please excuse my English.'

The most famous of all French singers was born on a sidewalk in Paris, with two policeman acting as midwives; brought up by her grandmother, who ran a brothel; and first sang on the streets, for money to live, at fifteen. Later, as the highest paid of French stars, she sang songs about the misery of her youth and her own ancient class, the Paris poor - which, her money prodigally wasted, she had never really left. Here, on a trip to New York - made as usual to stave off financial catastrophe - she writes of her song from the 1945 film, Etoile sans lumiere.
