Autograph Letter Signed “John Sartain,” April 12, 1849, Philadelphia, one page, plus integral address leaf, 10”x 8”, Extremely Fine. To Charles Hazeltine in New Hampshire, “In a few days I will have the prints you wish for... it should have been before this but that so many things constantly press on me, and... it is not an easy matter to get at the whereabouts of these prints which lie buried under whole mountains of confusion worse confounded....” With red PHILADA. RAIL ROAD and faint NEW-YORK 10CTS marks. Sartain came to the U.S. from England in 1830 and was the first to introduce mezzotint engraving to this country. He painted portraits in oil and miniatures on ivory, designed bank-note vignettes, and engraved plates for the leading periodicals of his day. He was in charge of the art department at the Centennial Exhibition in 1876.
