Among the myriad talents the Friedlander firm and its stable of artists possessed, their most impressive ability may have been turning ordinary hokum in to pure promotional gold. Not to belittle the abilities of Margot FranÁois atop her "tumbling action stilts.” She was the only lady in the world doing these tricks at the time–at least according to the poster. But in Friedlander’s hands, she becomes a paragon of slim-waisted grace instead of the vaudevillian carny novelty act she was. That’s not to say she was a flash in the pan. As early as 1902, we see Ms. FranÁois appearing before King Edward VII as a member of "Les FranÁois.” And contractual evidence shows that she was still balancing her way across the American stage as late as 1922. Sadly, no specific record of her act or personal history appear to have survived.
