The Rivals is a lesser known (to contemporary audiences) yet nonetheless hilarious Restoration comedy by Richard Brinsley Sheridan. As was the norm for characters in this style, their names deliciously reflect their nature–Captain Jack Absolute, Lydia Languish, the bumpkin Bob Acres. One character, however, marked for her humorous misuse of words, would go on to have her name used as a part of the English language–Mrs. Malaprop, a word coined by Sheridan. This poster comes from the acclaimed and widely-received late-19th century touring production of the play, a show directed by and featuring none other than Joseph Jefferson (see No. 89).
