A fascinating design for the Maison Peignon costume house from an unknown hand. With wonderfully detailed masks scattered before the military mannequin like so many guillotined heads, the slightly unsettling effect creates an irrefutable allure as well. The phantom image of costumed dancers present on the backdrop cloth almost seems as if it could be the handiwork of the LumiËre Brothers. Although the reasoning behind the cinema pioneer’s filming a masquerade gala for the shop remains unclear. Unless, of course, their costumes were just that spectacular. Unfortunately, all we are left with is conjecture.
