Called “the reigning belle of Paris,” ClÈo de MÈrode, the fabulous beauty of the Belle Epoque, danced not only at the Folies-BergËre, but performed at the OpÈra and OpÈra-Comique, winning praise for her appearance in Danse Cambodgienne, as well as the roles she created in other ballets. She is seen here, most likely, in Lorenza, the ballet of Rudolphe Darzens, with Music by Franco Alfano, which opened at the Folies-BergËre on November 4, 1901. She had a romantic affair with Leopold II, King of the Belgians, whose enemies nicknamed him ”ClÈopold.” Her farewell performance was in Paris in 1934 in a waltz partnered with Boris Skibine, father of choreographer and ballet director, George Skibine. She died at the age of ninety-one. Although this design cannot be attributed to a specific artist, it is winning in its simplicity and grace.
