Autographs
A Collection of Cancelled Covers From 50 Ships Present At Pearl Harbor On December 7, 1941

(PEARL HARBOR).

A collection of 50 original postal envelopes which were canceled on board American ships attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941. The cancellation dates range from 1932 to 1941, and many of the envelopes are cacheted with colorful vignettes. The envelopes are displayed alphabetically in a notebook; each envelope has a 5” x 7” card behind it (but not attached to it), printed with the name of the ship, the type of ship, and a short description of what happened to it at Pearl Harbor. For example, “USS Arizona BB-39 Battleship. Sunk by one torpedo and eight bombs. 1104 men lost.” Some of the ships are well know; others are not, such as the USS Ward, a destroyer which “Sank an enemy submarine, firing the first shot of the war.” The envelope representing the USS Arizona is on a special commemorative cover for “FLEET WEEK - ALOHA TO OUR NATIONS PRIDE", with an image of the Battleship at center of the text, date stamped: “August 8, 1936 - PEARL HARBOR"!

The 50 ships featured in this collection, along with their designations, are: USS Antares (Stores Ship), USS Arizona (Battleship), USS Bagley (Destroyer), USS Blue (Destroyer), USS Breese (Destroyer Minelayer), USS California (Battleship), USS Case (Destroyer), USS Cassin (Destroyer), USS Castor (Stores Issue Ship), USS Chew (Destroyer), USS Curtiss (Seaplane Tender), USS Dale (Destroyer), USS Dobbin (Destroyer Tender), USS Gamble (Minelayer), USS Grebe (Minesweeper), USS Honolulu (Light Cruiser), USS Hull (Destroyer), USS Hull (Destroyer), USS Jarvis (Destroyer), USS Maryland (Battleship), USS Medusa (Repair Ship), USS Monaghan (Destroyer), USS Mugford (Destroyer), USS Nevada (Battleship), USS New Orleans (Heavy Cruiser), USS Oklahoma (Battleship), USS Pelias (Submarine Tender), USS Pennsylvania (Battleship), USS Perry (Minesweeper), USS Phelps (Destroyer), USS Pruitt (Destroyer Minelayer), USS Raleigh (Light Cruiser), USS Ramapo (Oil Tanker), USS Reid (Destroyer), USS Sacramento (Patrol Gunboat), USS St. Louis (Light Cruiser), USS San Francisco (Heavy Cruiser), USS Schley (Destroyer), USS Selfridge (Destroyer), USS Shaw (Destroyer), USS Solice (Hospital Ship), USS Sumner (Survey Ship), USS Swan (Small Seaplane Tender), USS Tangier (Seaplane Tender), USS Tennessee (Battleship), USS Trever (Minesweeper), USS Utah (Target Ship), USS Vega (Cargo Ship), USS Vestal (Repair Ship), USS Ward (Destroyer) and the USS Worden (Destroyer).

(We offered a similar collection which sold in June of 2001 for $1,840.) An exciting collection for anyone interested in American Naval History, the battle of Pearl Harbor or World War II.
