Autographs
Possibly Unique Variety 'Robert Morris' French Loan Document

ROBERT MORRIS.
c. 1783, Revoutionary War United States Loan Office Bill of Exchange with France, Very Fine. Possibly Unique, being very similar to Anderson US-119, in size and style, but having a different text structure at top and lower left. It is unlike any form specifically listed by Anderson in 'The Price of Liberty' and is undoubtedly a 'discovery piece.' Partly printed (in French) document payable to and endorsed on the verso by, Robert Morris, , approximately 7' x 4'. Morris signs boldly on the back of a draft made out to him in the amount of 19,416.11 Livres Tournois, being quite a large sum of money at the time. A French version of the Continental Loan Office sight drafts. Morris, was Treasurer and one of the major financiers of the American Revolutionary War. This particular example is missing a 2" panel at far right, resulting in some loss of text and the signature of the issuer. MorrisÕ signature has a fold that has been expertly reinforced with archival tape. The signature itself is very large, in bold brown ink and clean. The overall appearance of the item is still quite good and its historical importance to the early financing of this country is significant.
