Lot 19 - 1823 Coronet Head Cent Restrike NGC MS63 BN
1823 Restrike Cent. Newcomb-2 (obverse); Sheldon-293 (reverse). Glossy steel brown and chocolate with faded mint red remaining in protected areas, especially on the obverse. There are some small spots of very light carbon on the obverse, the largest of these in the field right of star 4. Otherwise free of marks or other defects. Struck from the later state of the dies with strong die cracks on both sides and a series of rim cud breaks covering the dentils at stars 4-7. These "restrikes" were made privately in 1862-1879 using discarded mint dies that were sold as scrap by the mint in 1833. The heavily rusted dies were from the obverse of 1823 Newcomb-2 and the reverse of 1813 Sheldon-293. These cents helped satisfy the hunger of collectors for the scarce cents of 1823 over a century ago, and they are collected for their own merits today. EAC grade MS60.
