Autographs
James Monroe Autograph Letter Signed

JAMES MONROE, 5th President of the United States.
Autograph Letter Signed, 'Jas. Monroe,' as Minister to Great Britain, March 28, 1805, Aranjuez [Spain], 9.25' x 7.25', Fine. To an unknown recipient: 'Be so good as to enclose the within to some person at Paris to be delivered as soon as recd. to General Armstrong & believe me with great esteem sincerely yrs.' Written on laid paper with a large 'C & I Honig' watermark. Some faint dampstains affect part of the text and signature but render nothing illegible; there are a few spots and slits in the paper. Docket is on the attached integral leaf. After negotiating the Louisiana Purchase with U.S. Minister to France, Robert R. Livingston, in 1803, Monroe was sent to Spain in 1804 to resolve some ambiguities regarding Florida boundaries. He had been instructed to obtain the cession of the eastern part of Florida by Spain, but after months of waiting and letter writing and discourteous treatment by the Spanish government, he went on to London, where he and William Pinkney signed a commercial treaty with the British. Because they were unable to get the British to abandon the practice of impressment, the treaty was never even submitted to the U.S. Senate.
