Barnum & Bailey’s big production spectacle in 1912 was "Cleopatra.” One side of the circus big top seats was sacrificed to erect a gigantic stage upon which Antony and Cleopatra reigned over the hosts–a promised 1,250 characters to be precise–of soldiers, dancing girls, eunuchs, howdahed elephants and camel-mounted Arabs. We get a glimpse of that opulently mounted spectacle in this poster, with the Egyptian beauty patiently attending the arrival of her Roman paramour with all the storybook splendor that only "The Greatest Show On Earth” could provide.
