Autographs
Thomas Mifflin Pardons A Woman Convicted of Manslaughter

THOMAS MIFFLIN.
Document Endorsed 'T Mifflin' as Governor of Pennsylvania, February 26, 1793, 13' x 8', Very Good. Being a petition to Mifflin, as Governor, to pardon Margaret Byron, who was convicted of manslaughter on November 6, 1792, and sentenced to 'be branded on the Brawn of the left thumb with the letter M, pay a fine of 5£, undergo a servitude at hard labour six months and give two good freehold securities each in Fifty pounds for her good behavior during her life...' The Board of Inspectors recommends her pardon to Mifflin, On the docket page, Mifflin writes, 'Dismissed T Mifflin.' A true copy of the court judgment is included. There is a large dark stain on the first page of the petition, not affecting MifflinÕs signature, some archival tape repairs, and small fold splits and holes. The docket page has light soiling, but Mifflin signed boldly in dark brown ink. An interesting case and an unusual format for MifflinÕs signature.
