Lot 181: 17 Native American Indian Postcards
Autographs
(NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS).
17 Native American Indian-related Postcards, average Very Fine. Sixteen are color depictions and one is a black-and-white tribal photograph. The majority of the cards depict Native American life within the various tribes, from the ritual Devil Dance of the Apache Indians to the life at the Micmac Camp in Nova Scotia. The lot also includes a postcard with a chart, “explaining the markings used by the Indians on their handicraft,” as well as a postcard advertising the 1925 Indian Convention in Ponca City, Oklahoma, with “bigger shows, bigger crowds, and more Indians.” The text of the Indian Lament of Old Hosteen Yazzie, one of the last Navajo Indians to surrender to Kit Carson and the U.S. Army, as well as a color depiction of the man, adorns another postcard. The postmarks of the six postally used cards range from 1905 to 1944. (17 postcards)
