Autographs
Gouverneur Morris Writes to “Signer” Robert Morris

GOUVERNEUR MORRIS, Continental Congressman and Ambassador to France.
Letter Signed, “Gouv. Morris” as Ambassador to France, on plain, laid paper, March 28, 1793, Paris, France, 9” x 7.25”, Choice Extremely Fine. Here we see Gouverneur Morris writing to Robert Morris concerning instructions regarding produce from the Haitian Estate of Alexander La Rochefoucaut:

“...The writer of those letters owns in right of his Wife a considerable Estate, the Produce whereof is to be shipt as you may direct and the Proceeds of the Sales are to be invested in the funds of the United States and entered in the name of Alexander La Rochefoucant.”

An Autograph letter with the full integral address leaf and seal intact. In addition, Robert Morris’ handwriting appears on the reverse, where he has docketed the item. The two Morris’ were not related but had a lot of dealings together. Before becoming Ambassador to France, Gouverneur Morris was Robert’s agent in France. Gouverneur was the only foreign agent to stay in Paris during the “Reign of Terror.” A very lovely, high quality and important document connecting these two major historic American figures.
