Montaut, an artist better known for his racing posters, lays out a wonderful bustling street scene, where everything revolves around the modern day reliance on lubrication, and who better to provide this service than Cabanne-Nirouet, the source for the greases that keep Paris running smoothly. From unguent for horses hooves to lubricant for carriages (the “voitures” of the period) everyone needs oil. Royal Tof-Tof brand lubricant for automobiles, however, takes center stage. Life and charm are added to the bustle by the dog and goose tÍte-‡-tÍte, which leads the eye directly to the horse attempting to engage the automobile in a war of words, presumably over who will endure and who is merely a passing fad. The machine, secure in its place in the new world order, smugly chooses to remain silent.
