GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH (1990) - Gizmo Animatronic Puppet

An animatronic Gizmo puppet from Joe Dante's horror-comedy sequel Gremlins 2: The New Batch. After Gizmo was captured by scientists at a laboratory in the Clamp Center building, a new infestation of gremlins took over the building.

Gizmo and the gremlins were designed and built for the first film by effects artist Chris Walas. For Gremlins 2, Rick Baker's Cinovation Studios came in to handle the effects work, and slightly revised the character designs, including Gizmo, while creating all-new puppets and effects pieces.

This animatronic puppet is primarily made of foam latex, with a weighted mechanical body covered with brown and white hair and highly detailed features, including brown eyes, eyelashes, teeth, fingernails and toenails. Gizmo puppets were designed with interchangeable faces, so different facial expressions could be applied to indicate the character's mood. This example shows a concerned expression, and the face is attached via popper fastenings. The ears on this puppet have been removed following filming and replaced with a pair of original production mogwai ears.

Cut cables that were originally electrical wires are visible amid the fur on the puppet's stomach. These powered the puppet's body movement, bringing the mogwai to life, and indicate that it was used for shots when Gizmo's stomach is concealed, such as at the end, when he's in a box held by Kate (Phoebe Cates). An opening at the back of the body exposes what appears to be a mounting plate, suggesting the puppet was also attached to a rig on set.

The lot comes displayed on a custom-made stand with the base featuring the film title and character name. The puppet has undergone sympathetic restoration on the ears, hands and feet, notably the toes on the left foot. Care should be taken when handling the puppet, and attempting to remove its face is not advised. Dimensions (displayed): 15 cm x 34 cm x 34 cm (6" x 13 1/4" x 13 1/4")

Contains electronics and mechanical components; see notice in the Buyer's Guide.
