Lot 17: 7 Artist Signatures - Letters 1800s
Autographs
Seven Semi-Famous Artists

(ARTISTS.)
Lot of seven pieces of 19th-century correspondence from a variety of artists: (1882) Sir Seymour Haden (President of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers); (1833) C.R. Leslie, portrait painter; (1882) James S. Miller; (1810) Peter Maverick; Thomas Cole (no date); and a Mr. Alexander (no date). The principal interest in these letters--ranging in date from September 24, 1810 to December 16, 1882--is to collect the intimate, and sometimes formal, style of conversation in which these artists conducted their professional and personal affairs. (Maverick forwards to a bookseller a set of maps on “Palestine - Ancient World and Egypt”; Sir Haden scrawls two notes on “The Chicago Club” stationery; and Miller humbly accepts an offer to be included in a history of 19th century artists.) The condition of the letters ranges from Very Fine to Extremely Fine, and in size from 2.25” x 8” to 9.5” x 8”. Most are toned, with some minor soiling, but all are quite legible and very intriguing.
