GAMY
165. Renault 1913. 1912.
26 x 14 1/8 in./66 x 36 cm
Mabileau, Paris
Cond A. Framed.
Renault was founded in 1899. By 9111, it was the best selling car in France, its popularity won, to a great extent on the track. Both Louis and Marcel Renault began racing their cars at the turn of the century (Marcel was, in fact, killed in the Paris-Madrid race of 1903). The Renault was even imported and raced in the United States, scoring major successes in the 24-hour grinds–the popular nonstop automobile races. That doesn’t mean, however, that one’s testosterone-tinged reputation precludes one from the indulgence of refinement as amply demonstrated by Gamy and this Renault limousine’s pochoir evening at the Place de l’OpÈra. It is probable that Gamy was, in fact, Marguerite Montaut, wife of automobile artist Ernest Montaut (see No. 175); her nickname was Magy, an anagram of Gamy. All Gamy-signed works are in the same spirit and use a similar technique as Montaut’s, but date after his death in 1909.
