Lot 165 - 1881 Shield Nickel PCGS PR67 CAM
1881 Shield Nickel. A scarce, low-mintage year. The government's stock of shield nickels was used up by 1881, but this did not happen until very late in the year. Since the Secretary of the Treasury ordered the Philadelphia Mint to resume production of this denomination on November 12, and the first coins were not delivered until December 12, it is little wonder that the original mintage for the 1881 amounted to just 68,800 business strikes. The 3,575 Proofs were probably transferred from the Coining Department in January that year. This Superb Cameo Proof example is unsurpassable in grade or visual impact from its delightful gold-toned surfaces. Pinpoint striking definition is noted throughout, while disturbing abrasions or spotting are conspicuous by their absence. (#83836)
