(LOUISIANA PURCHASE).
“AN ADDRESS TO THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES, ON THE CESSION OF LOUISIANA TO THE FRENCH...," by Charles Brockden Brown, 1803, Published by John Conrad, & Co., Philadelphia, PA, H. Maxwell, Printer, 8.25" x 5," 56 pages, Choice Fine. Disbound pamphlet, partially separated along the spine, foxed and brown-toned pages, two ink stamps. This is a “new edition" of an address by a “French Counsellor of State" which “urges the seizure of this French territory for the protection of our Western people." Overall, a detailed historical document which provided some of the rationale for why the United States should take control of the Mississippi River and the settlements in Louisiana. Napoleon and France had just lost a bitter war with Toussaint L’Ouverture and the Haitian slaves, and were looking for ways to reduce their military commitments around the world. This historical document explores the many options available to France and the benefits to the U.S., should it agree to intercede. Howes B831.
