Fiat’s traditional concern is “producing ordinary, everyday cars for ordinary, everyday people” (Fordyce, p. 138). Nevertheless, the company has always leaned towards the spectacular in its advertising. This poster, for example, has the company’s name thrusting monolithically alongside a country lane, the poster-within-the-poster of the firm’s original model blown gently by the wake of its latest model, the Fiat 1400. This was the first all-new, post-WW II Fiat model, designed with an American-style bearing body instead of the traditional chassis. Its engineering and stylistic innovations required a total plant overhaul to produce. An act, in and of itself, worthy of monumental advertising. This is something of a departure for Bazzi, a painter and illustrator who leaned more towards caricature than iconoclastic platitudes. Stylistically, his poster work tends to run in a Cappiello-esque vein (black background, colorful central figure), opting to dismiss detail in favor of persuasive imagination. This particular variant is aimed at the firm’s Spanish speaking clientele with the addition of a single simple line of text beneath the model name: "The New Car.”
