Lot 159 (9HP-19) Full English sidelock double-barrel side by side 12ga shotgun marked “Army & Navy C.S.L.” (Cooperative Society Limited) in English leather trunk-type carrying case, serial number “49609”. The gun shows 28” barrels which are engraved on top rib “Barrels by George Gibbs, Ltd. 37 Baldwin St, Bristol”. The gun shows automatic ejectors, standard double triggers, English style straight stock, with thin English style hard rubber pad. The actions are nicely scroll engraved in typical English motifs. The barrels show approx. 85-95% old original blue finish which is starting to age and tone, some light erosion and minor losses of finish at edges. The frame has been lightly cleaned to grey, with faint traces of case hardening where protected and still very sharp with no serious polishing or buffing, and now drifting to a natural patina. The gun has been professionally restocked, and the trigger guard shows a modern reblue. The action is tight and the gun is mechanically sound with very good and still bright bores. The stock measures approx. 14-1/4” to the end of the wood, approx. 14-3/4” to the end of the pad. The gun shows nitro proofs for 2-1/2” chambers (now opened to 2-3/4”) and marked for 1-1/8oz of shot. The case is of a more modern period but is well made and of high quality with a simulated maker’s label. The Army & Navy stores of London were dealers who merchanted fine English guns primarily to the British military service members. Est.: $3,500-$7,000.
