c. 1720, NOVUS ORBIS SIVE AMERICA MERIDIONALIS ET SEPTENTRIONALIS, PER SUA REGNA... by Seutter, Augsburg, Very Fine.
19.5' x 22.5', handcolored. California as an island based on the Sanson-Homann formula but with additions; several rivers are inserted on the west coast and two mountains in the north (according to Tooley). There are two beautiful, large, cartouches. The title cartouche shows dark-skinned natives in various occupations; the chief reclines as a parasol is held over his head, and native birds fly about or perch atop a rock formation. Another large cartouche shows explorers from western Europe on one side and natives on the other, while a Christ-like figure above and between them holds scripture, a cross, and what is presumably the Holy Grail as a light shines above him. The description gives the origin of the name 'America' and also mentions the missionaries and the 'uncultivated' natives. A wind rose lies in the ocean between the cartouches. Overall toning and light soiling; there is a closed tear about 1.75' long, in the lower left quadrant, to the left of the center seam. A small stain in the upper left corner would hardly show with framing, and a few marginal blemishes, including a missing tip from the upper right corner, would not be visible at all. An exceptionally beautiful map, it can be found in TooleyÕs 'The Mapping of America,' Plate 61, No. 91. EAHA sold one of these maps for $2650 in October 2001.
