c. 1710, AMPLISSIMAE REGIONIS MISSISSIPI, SEU PROVINCIAE LUDOVICIANAE..., by J.B. Homann, Nuremberg, Very Fine.
19.5' x 23', handcolored, copperplate engraving. Map centering on the huge French province of Louisiana and part of Canada, with the English colonies and Spanish Florida, as well as part of New Mexico. A beautiful uncolored cartouche depicts Louis Hennepin, the French missionary who accompanied La Salle through the Great Lakes in 1679 and claimed to have reached the mouth of the Mississippi. Behind Hennepin is a French soldier in a tricornered hat, holding a musket; HennepinÕs hand is on a naked childÕs head, and a nude native holding a peace pipe is at left. A longhorn bull peers over the top of the cartouche and a vignette of Niagara Falls and a beaver colony. In the lower right corner is a fine vignette of a buffalo, an Indian man and an Indian woman with a papoose on her back. The paper is slightly age toned, with some light soiling in the margins; otherwise this is an exceptional and scarce map.
