JOHN LENNON, Slain Member of The Beatles.
Contract Signed, “John Lennon” on the reverse of a contract, October 15, 1968, London, 14” x 8”, Choice Extremely Fine. A contract for one of the songs on the fabled White Album, signed by Lennon in the landmark year of 1968. The White Album, released in November, 1968, found The Beatles at the height of their social as well as musical influence. The White Album was eagerly awaited as a sequel to Sgt. Pepper and long lines at record shops greeted its release. It was the first record issued under the Apple label and it was the Beatles’ first double album. In 1963, Brian Epstein had formed Northern Songs, Ltd. to handle publishing rights to the Beatles’ songs, and Lennon and McCartney only owned half of that company. It had the publishing rights to their White Album tracks. Maclen, Ltd. was formed in 1965 by McCartney and Lennon (thus Mac & Len) to collect royalties due the pair for their compositions. In this contract, dated October 15, 1968 (just prior to the Album’s release), Lennon signs as writer of the song and Neil Aspinall (Beatles head road manager and a director of Apple) signs for Maclen. The Agreement gives publishing rights to SEXY SADIE to Northern. We have seen only one other contract for a Lennon-McCartney song signed by one of them, that being a contract signed by Lennon regarding the rights to the song “Honey Pie”. Virtually all Beatles items on the market are signatures or signed programs or photos - items wonderful enough to be sure. But, it is indeed exceptional to be able to offer this remarkable document. Fine, beautifully framed with a photo.
