Lot 1540: c. 1790 Print, ÒJosephus in a Cave
<b>Judaica</b><hr><b>c. 1790 Print, 'Josephus in a Cave...,' Very Fine.</b>
Overall size 15' x 9.5,' taken from the American Edition of MaynardÕs 'Josephus.' Moderate, but even, age toning. Elaborate 'faux' framing surrounds a scene of Josephus casting lots with other men to see who would be destroyed next instead of falling into the hands of the Roman siegers. Following the deaths and suicides of all but two of their companians, Josephus and another survivor decided that capture by the Romans was better than death, so they surrendered. Josephus became the mouthpiece of the Romans, chronicling their history, including his eyewitness report of the destruction of the Jewish Temple in AD 70.
