MARQUIS DE LA FAYETTE.
Letter Signed, “Lafayette,” in brown ink on a handwritten letter in French, no date or place, 6.5” x 8.25,” one-page integral sheet, Choice Very Fine. Integral leaf is addressed: “Monsieur Lenouard/rue de tournou No. 6/aui Paris.” The text, translated, reads: “I am sending to Monsieur Lenouard all the copies of Le Moniteur that I have. I have no other introduction than the memoirs of Bailly. I would have kept the tables if I were not assured that the angle and the tables in quarto were worth more.” Along the bottom there appears a note, probably written by Monsieur Lenouard, which reads: “On May 10th I received 5 volumes and on the 12th 60 volumes in quarto binding, a small packet of facsimiles covering at least a two year period.” Bailly, mentioned in the letter, was a noted French astronomer and politician who was elected deputy from Paris to the States-General, later elected President of the Third Estate. In 1793, Bailly was guillotined. “Le Moniteur Universel” published the debates of the Constituent Assembly and was the official journal of the government from 1799 to 1848. This letter exhibits normal fold lines, and has a few small tears that have been professionally restored. The fold-over sheet has separated along the spine but the overall appearance is quite nice.
