(JOHN F. KENNEDY.)
Original UPI wire service account of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy on November 22, 1963, Choice As Made. This printed account, on rolled newsprint approximately 25 feet long, was saved by a radioman on the USS Mt. McKinley.
The aged newsprint is in three sections, the first with minor loss of paper at margins at the very beginning, none affecting the important text. The news quickly unfolds, beginning that a shot had been fired in Dallas from a nearby building (the Texas Repository) and then is interrupted with three lines labeled 'Flash,' followed by 'President Kennedy Dead.' As news becomes more firm, the wire reports that Texas Governor John Connelly was also shot, and gives news of the trip to the hospital, the transfer of power to Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, the capture of Lee Harvey Oswald, reactions from around the world, and more.
A fascinating artifact! Auction records of similar wire accounts reflect a steady demand for items of this type. (EAHA sold a similar newswire report in March 1998 for $12,650.)
