SCRIBNER’S
150. Scribner’s: Two Posters. 1895.
Artist: George M. Reevs (1864-1930)
Each Approx.: 12 3/8 x 17 1/2 in./31.3 x 44.5 cm
Cond B+/Horizontal fold; slight stains at edges.
Ref: Reims, 1294 (a); Phillips III, 272 & 289d
Jingoistic posturing and political correctness aside, this pair of Reevs’ posters packs a strong, emblematic visual punch. Even at the time of its production, the October design made an international impression, as "The Poster” of February, 1896, stated the following: "One of the most striking American posters of the last year was ‘The Chinese Must Go,’ issued by Scribner’s. It was the work of George M. Reevs . . . It promises to become a ‘rarity’” (p. 18).
