Lot 150 - 1867 Shield Nickel. Rays PCGS PR64CAM
1867 Shield Nickel. Rays. The Mint removed the rays from the reverse of the Shield Nickel in 1867 in order to improve die life and to make the new denomination easier to produce. Since only 2 million Rays Shield Nickels were issued in early 1867 (as opposed to 28.8 million coins without rays), it is little wonder that this second-year variety is difficult to locate in the finer Mint State grades. Proofs, however, are an altogether different kettle of fish: This uncommonly bold, Choice Proof is easily among the finest of its grade we have seen or had the pleasure to offer. The surfaces are particularly mirrored and "showy" with only a stray die line or hairline here and there setting a barrier to a higher number. The rarity of the Proof 1867 With Rays date provides an indication of the tremendous attention generated by this delightfully complicated design. Full frosty shield and stars appear as though they are floating on the immensity of a glassy sea, the combination of the two providing endless enjoyment to the student of cameo Shield nickels. Virtually without toning. PCGS #50150460. (#83818)
