Autographs
(CHESTER A. ARTHUR).
Autograph Letter Signed, “Z[achariah] Chandler” on “Department of the Interior” stationery, May 22, 1876, Washington, D.C., 8”x 5,” 4 pages integral, Choice Extremely Fine. Chandler writes to Arthur as Collector of Customs for New York City, expressing fears that S.S. Burdett, Commissioner of the Land Office of the Dept. of the Interior, may have left the country with a sum of money: “His wife who is here is nearly distracted with fear and anxiety on his account. He had tendered his resignation by letter dated New York the 13th inst. This fact in connection with that of his supplying himself with funds, leads me to think that he may have taken passage for Europe....” Lightly toned, with normal folds, and accompanied by a toned engraving of Chandler.
