THOMAS JEFFERSON, 3rd President of the United States.
Document Signed 'Th: Jefferson' as Secretary of State, on fine laid paper, June 14, 1790, 15' x 9', Extremely Fine. A true copy of an Act of Congress with beautiful Broadside format Headed 'Congress of the United States: At The Second Session, Begun and held at the City of New-York on Monday the fourth of January, one thousand seven hundred and ninety,' and detailing 'An ACT for the Relief of Thomas Jenkins and Company.' The Act states, in part: 'Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the duties amounting to one hundred and sixty-seven dollars and fifty cents, be remitted on a parcel of hemp, duck, ticklenburg, and molasses, the property of Thomas Jenkins and Company, merchants, of the city of Hudson, in the state of New-York, which were lost by fire in the brig Minerva, on her passage from New-York to the city of Hudson, her port of delivery. And the Secretary of the Treasury of the United States is hereby authorized and directed to allow a credit on the bond or bonds executed by the said Thomas Jenkins and Company, for payment of the duties on the said goods.' Signed in type by George Washington as President, John Adams as Vice President, and by Frederick Augustus Muhlenberg as Speaker of the House of Representatives. JeffersonÕs signature is bold and beautiful. There are three horizontal folds, not affecting the signature. Some soiling at the far right margin will not be visible once the document is matted and framed. A wonderful document for display.
