Kendall provides us with a rare glimpse at the artists behind the Scribner’s artwork with these poster portraits of Robert Frederick Blum (1857-1903) and Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944). Though an accomplished, respected artist in many disciplines–including a two-year illustrative correspondentship for Scribner’s in Japan in the early-1890s– Blum is best known for the vibrant and atmospheric canvases that provided the groundwork for the full acceptance of Impressionism in America. Gibson, on the other hand, was one of the most influential illustrators of his day, recognized for his creation of the "Gibson girl” (see No. 151), the graphic synonym for a well-dressed, sophisticated young woman of the 1890s–one of the earliest associations of an artist’s name with the popular image he created.
