Scotson-Clark draws his promotional inspiration for Lilith, a fantastical moral allegory by George MacDonald–the Scottish Congregational minister turned author–from the novel’s Third Chapter and its philosophical discourse betwixt protagonist and raven. A Brighton, England, native and classmate of Aubrey Beardsley, Scotson-Clark, emigrated to the United States at seventeen, earning his keep as a New York stage and costumer designer. Though an active illustrator in the States, Scotson-Clark returned to England in 1897, where he continued his career as a theatrical poster designer. Pencil-signed by the artist at bottom!
